Choosing between the Dyson Supersonic and the T3 Cura Luxe isn’t easy: They’re both salon-quality hair dryers with a plethora of special features, and they’re both incredible products in their own right.

The Dyson boasts an incredibly striking design, a motor that’s 8x as powerful as the motor found in most hair dryers and a 13-bladed fan that’s almost silent.

Meanwhile the T3 Cura Luxe looks like the kind of thing most professional stylists’ dream of owning, and it still features things like digital heat control, and a unique fan that’s been designed to minimize turbulence.

To make decision-making even harder, both hairdryers have been designed to help manage straw-like or flyaway hair: using ionizing technology to produce a static-free airflow that’s capable of producing professional-looking styles every time.

The Dyson Supersonic

We’re always a little skeptical of so-called ‘revolutionary’ products, but after a few days with the Dyson Supersonic, we have to admit that it delivers everything the manufacturer promises.

First things first, it looks like something straight out of a sci-fi movie, what with its handle-mounted motor, and its compact, tube-like head.

Handle-mounted Motor

Having the motor located in the handle doesn’t just make for a pretty dryer though: As Dyson is keen to point out, this radical design decision has allowed them to completely rebalance the dryer so that it doesn’t weigh your arm down.

Having used it for extended periods of time, we can attest to the fact that it is incredibly easy to use, and that it won’t leave you with a sore arm.

Better still, having the center of balance sitting right in the center of the handle means that you can pivot the dryer without moving your whole elbow, making it much easier to get good angles without straining yourself.

Strip the Water Away

The motor itself is pretty impressive as well: It’s around 8x faster than the motors found in most hair dryers and it uses a patented air-flow multiplication technology to draw around 2.4 cubic meters of air over your hair every minute.

If this sounds like a meaningless factoid, just think of it like this: Rather than using lots and lots of heat to dry your hair, the Supersonic relies on velocity to strip the water away from your follicles – getting the job done faster, and at a much lower temperature.

No Overheating

Speaking of which, we’re also a huge fan of the Supersonic’s intelligent temperature control, which uses a tiny microprocessor and a suite of tiny sensors to repeatedly check the temperature (about 20 times a second) and modulate it to ensure that your hair never gets overheated.

People who suffer from straw-hair will absolutely love this hair dryer. It’s one of the few models that you can rely on to produce salon-quality results in the comfort of your own home, and it really does leave your hair looking glossy and smooth.

It’s also a great choice for those of us that are prone to getting our hair sucked into the dryer (the intake is on the bottom!) or those of us that want something a little more sophisticated than the average $50-$100 hairdryer.

Much Less Noise

Did we mention that it’s basically noiseless too? Yep, turns out that Dyson have added another 2 blades to the traditional, 11-blade fan so that the sound of the dryer shifts frequency. The end result is a quiet, almost indiscernible whirring that’s miles away from the muffled roar that most hairdryers produce.

 Some Downsides

There are only two downsides. Firstly, the button layout is very, very odd. It looks good, but it can be a real effort to switch between different heat settings on the fly, and we’d have much preferred a more compact arrangement.

The other drawback is, of course, the price. All of the Supersonic’s technological marvels do put it in a much higher price bracket than most hair dryers – including the T3 Cura Luxe. If you’re looking for the last word in styling technology, this is the dryer for you. But if you’re shopping on a budget, the Cura Luxe might be a better option.

T3 Cura Luxe

In some ways, the T3 Cura Luxe is a much more traditional hairdryer: The motor is located in the head, the buttons are all clumped together in the normal place and it looks like the kind of thing you’d expect to find in an upmarket hair salon.

That’s not to say that it skimps on the extra features though. When we first got our hands on this dryer, we were pleased to find that it boasted things like a “volume booster” option, to quickly inject some extra life into limp hair, and a special “cool-shot” button that’s designed to lock styles in place when you’re done drying.

Get Things Done

It’s a very modern hairdryer too. It uses digital heating technology to maintain an even temperature at all times; it ionizes its own airflow to cut out static frizz, and it also features a unique fan that’s been engineered to cut out turbulence, and produce a single, tight air stream.

All of these features do help to produce a finish that’s almost on-par with the Dyson. We’ve seen the T3 Cura Luxe described as “the firebolt of hairdryers” in some online reviews, and while we were initially a little skeptical, we can honestly say that we were pleasantly surprised by its performance.

Ion technology

The built-in ion technology produces smooth, glossy hair on any of the five heat settings, and the aforementioned digital heating technology does mean that you feel in-control of the entire experience.

It’s also a great option for people with hair that tends to get a little straw-like after blow drying, and it is relatively fast too: Thanks to the top-tier engineering that’s gone into the dryer, we did find that it dried hair much quicker than conventional dryers in the $100 – $200 range.

Fancy Design

It looks gorgeous too. That might not be the most important thing in the world, but there’s no getting around the fact that it’s sleek, ergonomic design and retro-future styling notes make it incredibly eye-catching.

T3-Cura-Luxe

 Some Downsides

The downside? Ultimately, it is just a good conventional hairdryer. It might stand head and shoulders above any of the $50 – $150 hairdryers you’ll find online, but it won’t deliver the revolutionary experience that the Dyson provides. It’s noisier, it doesn’t have a handle-mounted motor and it may weight your arm down during long styling sessions.

It’s not as fast as the Dyson either. In fact, we found that the Dyson dried our hair in about 2/3rds of the time, and that the overall finish was slightly better too.

Conclusion

If you’re just looking for a good hairdryer, the T3 Cura Luxe has you covered. It’s streets ahead of most conventional hairdryers, and it’s more than capable of delivering salon-standard hairstyles from the comfort of your own home. It’s also a good $150 cheaper than the Dyson Supersonic.

That said, if you’re looking for a truly revolutionary hairdryer, we do honestly think the Dyson Supersonic is the only way to go. It’s blend of sophisticated heating technology, high velocity motor and unique design make it a real joy to use, and it’s pretty-much guaranteed to produce a salon-quality finish every time.
